Levels of Proficiency

•         Beginning – The student at this level struggles with his/her understanding; prerequisite and fundamental knowledge and or skills have not been acquired or developed adequately to aid understanding.

•         Developing – The student at this level possesses the minimum knowledge and skills and core understandings, but needs help throughout the performance of authentic tasks.

Approaching Proficiency – The student at this level has developed the fundamental knowledge and skills and core understandings and with little guidance from the teacher and/or with some assistance from peers, can transfer these understandings through authentic performance tasks.

•         Proficient – The student at this level has developed the fundamental knowledge and skills and core understandings, and can transfer them independently through authentic performance tasks.

Advanced – The student at this level exceeds the core requirements in terms of knowledge, skills and understandings, and can transfer them automatically and flexibly through authentic performance tasks.

Attitude:

During my first class with Kevin, I observed that he was too shy and quiet, maybe because he was just adjusting at that moment. But as time passes by, he has changed to a more interactive kid. He is already smiling at the on-set of our class. He is now more cooperative in our class and has fun with the songs and videos that I would introduce to him. I can see that he has changed a lot in his social behavior and interaction. Keep it up Kevin.  Learning while enjoying is a very meaningful learning experience.

Reading:

I can say that Kevin’s reading skill is in “Developing Proficiency”. He has acquired basic knowledge about reading but there are still many English words that he finds it difficult to read. At the same time, he does not know some of the meanings of the words as well. However, what is good about Kevin is that, he tends to follow the proper way of reading the words after I corrected him. He can easily learn it after my correction. Keep it up Kevin. Just make it sure to apply the things I have taught to you.

Comprehension:

I would consider Kevin’s Comprehension skill as “Developing Proficiency”. He understands simple English words. However there are some words that he cannot understand unless I would apply TPR as I say the words. What’s good about him was that he easily remembers the new words that I would introduce to him. In our reading comprehension activity, I can say that he can actually understand the reading material. He can answer my evaluative questions. He is also a visual learner because he understands more a story/passage with pictures and illustrations.

Speaking and Pronunciation:

For his speaking and pronunciation skill, I would consider it as “Developing Proficiency” as well. Kevin can speak out some simple sentences but most of the time; he cannot still express his thoughts and ideas.  He is still hesitant to express his thoughts in English and tend to speak Korean. When it comes to his pronunciation, he can pronounce vowel and consonant letters correctly; however, he has still difficulty in voice intonation and proper stressing of words. What’s good thing about here is that he would try to correct himself immediately after he has learned the proper way of pronouncing a certain word.

Recommendations/Comments:

I suggest that Kevin should widen his vocabulary more so he may be able to speak or express his ideas better with confidence. He can read more English books or download an Online English Dictionary and Translations on his phone so he can always check those words he is not familiar with. Watching English movies is also a good option for him to learn new English words and expressions as well as learning how native speakers speak English fluently. He can observe carefully the mouth of the natives and imitate it so he may be able to pronounce the words properly.

Future Goals:

The teacher would make it sure to give more chance to the student in speaking  up by conducting some speaking exercises and asking more questions allowing the student to speak up his ideas in his own way. Additionally, the teacher would like to introduce more vocabulary words as much as possible in every class and assure to correct student’s mispronunciation promptly and carefully.
